all neighborhoods and administrative areas are broadly divided in four regions - the zona norte (northern zone), zona oeste (western zone), zona central (central zone), and the zona sul (southern zone).

the zona central is home to the historical building of the city, while the zona oeste is were many go to enjoy lesser known beaches and gorgeous natural sites.

typically, zona norte is the destination of those who wish to explore the green wonders of the tijuca forest, as opposed to the zona sul were all the most famous beaches and the world famous sugar loaf are located.
