Payment should be made with small bills, as vendors continually find themselves irksomely strapped for change, and it is common practice to tip at the end of the transaction. most beach vendors will not accept foreign currencies, but just local reals - offering dollars or euros could make the vendor uncomfortable.

If the product is not desired, it is custom to signal this by making a sign with one's index finger, wagging from left to right twice, smiling, and saying 'Não obrigado' (no thank you) while giving a 'thumb-up' sign - This indicates, politely and uniformly, that the product is not wanted, and prevents the vendor from wasting valuable time and effort.

Whether accepting or declining, one should always show kindness to the vendor in respect of their trade and toil - the salesman's work can be tiring, so a smile and the exchange of pleasantries is often a much appreciated display of warmth in their day.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
