posto 9, near rua vinícius de moraes has long been regarded as the trendiest part of ipanema's shoreline and is famous for alternative gatherings, liberal political views, and the (illegal) smoking of marijuana.

the beach is also known for its beautiful views of the  iconic dois irmãos (two brothers) peaks - now symbol of ipanema even though the mountains are actually located in the adjacent neighborhood of leblon.  

the famous favela vidigal sprawls across the base of morro dois irmãos, and on a clear day hikers can be seen making their up the mountain in the distance - as the lofty form affords some great outlooks over pedra da gávea, pedra bonita, and são conrado.
