at a glance

a very unique type of blocos, if they can be called that, are the bate-bolas - a most fascinating carnival tradition rarely talked about but still very present in many areas of the city.

in rio de janeiro bate-bolas, or clovis, are only found in the north and west zones, towards the suburbs.

the term bate-bolas can be translated as 'ball-slammers', because of the very heavy rubber ball they carry. arrow-back      arrow-forward
