at a glance

unknown to most, and completely outside the publicized circle of blocks in rio, there is also one type of mini group called bate-bolas - a fascinating carnival tradition dating back centuries.

not a block, bate-bolas are teams of revelers using exactly identical and very elaborate costumes, and roaming the streets of the city to 'scare' other revelers.

taking part in the street celebrations knowing a bit more about the context of each party adds a level of fun and connection to carnival in rio.   arrow-back     arrow-forward
