at a glance

the parades moved again in 1974 to avenida presidente antónio carlos, and then to rua marques de sapucaí in 1978, the street where they remain until today.

up until 1983, the bleachers were assembled and disassembled on each side of rua marques de sapucaí each year at carnival time.

in 1984, the governor of rio de janeiro leonel brizola commissioned a new stadium to be designed by the famous architect oscar nyemyer, as the temporary stands in place at the time became insufficient for the ever increasing crowds.

the design included a 700 meter runway, seating, boxes, medical rooms, food courts, and would be exclusively used to present the carnival shows each year, and important musical performances. arrow-back     arrow-forward
