José Datrino, best known as Profeta Gentileza, can be considered the Godfather of graffiti in Rio de Janeiro. Formerly a merchant, he gave up all material possessions and dedicated himslef only to spiritual life, becoming a homeless wanderer, lodging underneath bridges and viaducts, and traveled the streets donning long white hair and long white robes. José has been reified in the memories of cariocas for his mystical and moralistic messages, with the most notable of all being 'Gentileza Gera Gentileza', meaning 'Kindness generates kindness', which he inscribed in yellow and green over and over, and that can still be seen on the pillars of a demolished rio viaduct. |
