at a glance

the neighborhood of lapa has a little bit of everything for everybody - street parties, bars, and small hip-hop clubs that tend to be more comfortable, casual, and sometimes trendier than the high-end samba clubs that attract a more dressed-up crowd.

as a rule of thumb in the zona sul (south zone) after dark, one should remember that many bars, restaurants, and clubs will not allow entry with sandals or beach attire on - in most upscale areas such as leblon, gávea, and barra, a collared shirt or button-up is always recommended.

it is always helpful to keep in mind that an early evening in a particular area may begin informally but becomes more sophisticated as the night goes on - this is especially relevant in lapa where street parties happen right across from sophisticated clubs to small intimate bars that serve their clientele on plastic tables on the footpaths and squares.      arrow-back    arrow-forward
