although safety has greatly improved, visitors should only explore these areas accompanied by tour guides or professionals of the field. visitors should keep in mind that, even when in the presence of tour guides, there is still a certain amount of risk associated with being inside a favela, as outlined in our favela safety section.

while cameras may be permitted, we suggest only bringing small cameras and avoid using zoom lenses and photographing individuals - on occasion, residents of the community forbid intrusive visitors from taking pictures.
