indeed, to some extent, the term 'asphalt' is itself out-dated, as favelas are now largely paved - this is symbolic of a departure from a rio constituted of 'two completely separate worlds,' since every day more these worlds are interacting and seeping into one another.

increased access to computers and internet also mean that residents of favelas are highly active on social media, using Facebook and Twitter accounts to publicize events and social initiatives - favelas' voices are being heard on the asphalt, in real time, and worldwide.
