the books we list in this section were published after the beginning of the pacification of the favelas in rio de janeiro in 2008 - when read in conjunction with books covering the years before this period, the shifting discourse of the communities living in rio's favelas becomes aparent.

furthermore, by reading publications and academic papers covering both periods,  readers can get a true sense of the radical changes and improvements that have taken place in rio de janeiro in it's recent history - indeed, these changes went well beyond an overall improvement in the urbanization and safety of many favelas, as they reached deeply in the common perception of favelas. as such it initiated nothing less than a transformation of the city as a whole.
