(what is a favela, after all?), is a recently released book by the observatório de favelas, an important ngo based in the complexo da maré. this work centers on several aspects of a favela in its complexity, and incorporates a multitude of experiences and ideas of 10 researchers.  it can be read on this link.

moro na favela (i live in the favela) is a book of 50 photographs selected from 50,000 submissions by favela residents and correspondents spanning a 10 year period.  produced by viva favela, this book is the work of renowned photographers walter mesquita, tony barros, and nando dias, among others. edited by viva rio in partnership with editora olhares.
