at a glance

Jacques asserts that the concept of a 'labyrinth' is imposed upon the slum by outsiders who themselves find it to be a disorientating space. In contrast, inhabitants are able to fluidly travel amongst favelas' intricate pathways, exhibiting a skill and rhythm akin to the swing of a samba.

Post-structuralist ideas from thinkers such as Foucault, Deleuze and Derrida are also applied, such as the idea of 'natural and wild occupations'.

the author concludes by advocating the implementation of urban-architects who would live within these spaces and work to organize, translate and catalyze the interests of their inhabitants.

Estética da ginga: a arquitetura das favelas através da obra de Hélio Oiticica is available in select bookstores and online via casa da palavra or on this link.
