winner of several awards, orfeu negro, (black orfeus) is based on the play 'orfeu da conceição' by famous composer vinícius de moraes.  in greek mythology orpheus was a musician who could charm anyone with his music.  the film is a love story set in set in chapéu mangueira and babilônia during carnival.   outstanding soundtrack by antônio carlos jobim, and luiz bonfá.  1959, 100 minutes.  the trailer can be seen here, and a detailed review can be read here.

in 1999 a remake was titled 'orfeu' featuring a soundtrack by caetano veloso, a most celebrated brazilian composer.  reprising the same plot as 'orfeu negro', this movie is set in modern-day brazil, it is extremely colorful, beautifully shot, and notes how orfeu, who has the means to live in areas other than his native favela, chooses instead to stay in the community where he grew up.  110 minutes.  the trailer can be watched here, and a review can be read here. arrow-back      arrow-forward
