chapéu mangueira is a small
beach-front favela located in 'alto'
leme, in the
zona sul of rio.
the
community owes the name to a
factory of
hats (chapéu) that was supposed to be
built inside the community in the
1940's. even though it was never
built, there was a sign announcing its
construction for many years, and this
lead to the
adoption of the name.
home to just 10,000 inhabitants, this
endearing community is blessed with incredible
views of the
pão de açúcar
(sugar loaf), the ocean,
the
botafogo
bay, and the marina
da glória.
