at a glance

established in 1853, the morro da mangueira is one of the oldest and culturally most important favelas in rio de janeiro.

originally named morro dos telégrafos (hill of the telegraphs) due to its proximity to the first telegraphs of rio and brazil, this community was later renamed morro da mangueira due to the widespread presence and farming of mango trees (mangueiras) in the area.

rich of history, this community went through several periods of challenges, set-backs, and difficulties.  yet, it also enriched rio with some of the most significant and important musicians of its history.arrow-back      arrow-forward
