at a glance

cantagalo and pavão-pavãozinho are a group of favelas set respectively behind ipanema and copacabana, in the zona sul  of rio.

about 20,000 thousand people live in these communities, and it is estimated that nearly all residents have access to water and sewer services, telephone lines, and many even own satellite tv.  most residents here are native cariocas, confirming a status of 'privileged favela' among all rio's communities.

despite their limited size, these favelas are of particular importance because of their high visibility in the two most important tourist areas of rio.  just like rocinha, these neighborhoods are the surprising backdrop to very selective neighborhoods, as such underlying the disparity among average incomes per area in rio, and making this contrast extremely visible to visitors.arrow-back      arrow-forward
