Land ownership was formalized and residents were given home addresses, allowing them to be served by common services such as mail delivery.

Projects as basic as the pavement of streets with water drainage gutters and the installation proper sewage lines were completed, improving mobility and sanitary conditions within the favelas.

Also involved was the integration of public social services for health, education and childcare as well as the provision of more low-cost housing and activities for leisure, culture and athletics. 

Another goal was to offer income generation training to favela residents, which account for an estimated 1 to 1.5 million of the 5.5 million total residents of metropolitan Rio de Janeiro.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
