at a glance

the unfinished orange-brick look of many favelas can be misleading - in fact, many of these residences are properly painted and finished on the inside, but the characteristic 'favela look' is purposively kept by some residents as point of pride and differentiation with buildings in non-favela areas.

many implementation difficulties were encountered throughout the years, ranging from the opposition by organized criminal factions, structural difficulties, new and untested approaches, and even the unwillingness of residents to relocate or abandon unsafe locations.

in fact, one unfortunate yet necessary side effect of these gentrification programs, is the removal of some homes to make way for larger roads inside the favelas - these wider roads are needed both to accommodate improved public transport, and to allow unobstructed access for better law enforcement.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
