the ilha do modesto is an island located in one of the city's largest lagoons and listed as one of Niterói's biological reserves by state law number 1943/2002, and preserves the native flora and fauna of the region, which it has in abundance as it fits nicely in the oceanic region.

more than just conservation, the creation of the biological reserve on the island had a number of aims and objectives, chief among them to give the biome of the island the best possible chance of preservation - at its core, the reserve is aimed at protecting the rare and endangered ecosystems of the region, but it also hopes to rescue and consolidate the history of the island, as well the regeneration of the native ecology, by reintroducing native species of various kinds.
