the jacarepaguá lagoon is located just behind barra da tijuca, separated from the atlantic ocean by the urbanized sandbank which became the renowned neighborhood during the second half of the 20th century.

along its shores were built several important landmarks, still holding a great regional importance.

to the north was the autódromo internacional nelson piquet, also known as the jacarepaguá racetrack which now is part of the olympic park.
