the homonymous island was located to the north and would be one of the pillars for construction of the embankment.

east of fundão were the islands of baiacu, cabras and catalão, and to the south there were pindaí do fererira, pindaí do frança, and bom jesus.

the positioning of these rocky peaks would influence the construction of the embankment, which ended up with the current vague 'horseshoe' shape.
