southward there is the almirante barroso avenue, which begins on praça do expedicionário and, in its turn, accesses the praça floriano, known as cinelândia and filled with theaters and cinemas, the church of the venerable third order of são francisco of penitence and, at its very end, the renowned metropolitan cathedral of saint sebastian of rio de janeiro.

yet, these are just the most important sites - there's much more to be found in this historical neighborhood. 

many historic moments, including dom pedro's announcement of brazil's independence occurred at  campo de santana - on september 7, 1822, dom pedro i (peter the first) of spain, the founder and first emperor of brazil announced the successful and bloodless establishment of the new empire of brazil.

and then, it was the second emperor of brazil dom pedro ii, who selected auguste françois marie glaziou, a french landscape architect to design the park.
