there are a number of theories regarding the origin of the name 'flamengo' - one theory holds that the area was named after the 'flemish', referring to the prisoners that were held here during the period of the dutch invasion of brazil in the xvii century, and another theory holds that there were many 'flamingos' in the region, called in fact 'flamengos' in portuguese. |
