at a glance

there are a number of theories regarding the origin of the name 'flamengo' - one theory holds that the area was named after the 'flemish', referring to the prisoners that were held here during the period of the dutch invasion of brazil in the xvii century, and another theory holds that there were many 'flamingos' in the region, called in fact 'flamengos' in portuguese.

at the end of the 19th century the neighborhood of flamengo began to gain importance, particularly in late 1905, when avenida beira mar was opened, linking the area with the city centre and botafogo - over the years the neighborhood underwent various changes, most notibly in 1964 when the area gained the flamengo embankment, the location of the flamengo park. arrow-back      arrow-forward
