the historical museum, museu histórico da cidade do rio de janeiro was created in 1934 and exhibits information about the development of the city of rio de janeiro from its founding in 1565 until the mid-twentieth century.

the museum has a collection of about 17 thousand pieces, including 19th century furniture, sculptures, jeweler, paintings, coins, armor and weaponry, and a vast collection of books and documents.  

among the most famous pieces are the throne of king john vi, master valentine sculptures, and many 19th century paintings.
