at a glance

in its early days, the neighborhood was full of farms owned by wealthy landowners, with the most prominent one belonging to comendador antónio martins lage, who possessed a vast english-style park, an imposing mansion and beautiful lush gardens that were sprinkled throughout his estate.

in 1965, the estate was sold to the governor, who transformed it into present-day parque lage. nowadays the park houses the school of the visual arts and preserves the attributes of the era. furthermore, the lakes and dense forestry were preserved. the woody hike in the forest up to the heights of corcovado is still an accessible trip for visitors as well.

the botanical garden itself, now called 'instituto de pesquisas jardim botânico do rio de janeiro' (institute of research of the botanical garden of rio de janeiro), is an important recreational area for the residents of rio as well as attracting large amounts of visitors. most of its area open to the public and known for its calm and green spaces. arrow-back      arrow-forward
