the museu do meio ambiente  (museum of the environment), is housed in a beautifully restored building from the 1900s. the museum opened in 2008, at the time of the 200 year anniversary of jardim botânico (the botanical gardens) as the first museum in south america focusing exclusively on the environment and environmental issues.

the museum, under the umbrella of the institute of botanical garden of rio de janeiro, is a pioneering space committed to contributing to both the conservation of biodiversity and the viability of environmental sustainability whilst keeping in dialogue with society in constructing this knowledge.

receiving approximately 600,000 visitors per year, the museu do meio ambiente conducts educational activities and debates on the first floor in a space of 400 square meters, encouraging the active participation of society in the discussion of environmental topics. arrow-back      arrow-forward
