Presented by Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa, the study As camélias do Leblon e a abolição da escravatura,(The camellias of Leblon and the abolition of slavery)by Eduardo Silva, reconstructs forgotten episodes starting from when princess Isabel welcomed run-away slaves into her palace - The final crisis of slavery, in Brazil, gave rise to a new model of resistance, which could be termed abolitionist quilombo. In the traditional model of slave resistance, the dominant tendency was towards hiding and secret war, but the Quilombolas struggled to protect there day-to-day lives, their internal structure and their leadership from every type of enemy or outsider, including, afterwards, historians - the flower Camélias, popular in leblon, served as a symbol of this movement. Presented by Prefecture of Rio de Janeiro, the study Fachada do antigo Hotel Leblon,(The facade of the former Hotel Leblon) analyzes alto leblon, and is a precious source of historical information for the whole district. |
