since most of the traffic going through são conrado goes through an avenue away from this beach, most people who are not familiar with rio do not see this area from their cars, and consequently do not think of visiting it.

commonly called praia de são conrado, due to the name of the neighborhood facing the beach, the official name of this beach is praia da gávea, named for the nearby pedra da gávea, the easily recognizable flat-top mountain that can be seen from many locations in rio.
