at a glance | Presented by the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, the study 'Os ciganos do Catumbi: De 'andadores do Rei' e comerciantes de escravos a oficiais de justiça na cidade do Rio de Janeiro', (The gypsies of Catumbi: The 'Andadores do Rei' (King Walkers) and the traders of slaves to judicial officials in the city of Rio de Janeiro), by Marco Antonio da Silva Mello, Felipe Berocan Veiga, Patrícia Brandão Couto and Mirian Alves de Souza, discusses the participation of calon gypsies in the commerce of African slaves and the judicial powers of Rio from the time of the court of D. João VI, analyzing the commercial practices and the formation of networks of organizations and informal relations. The presence of this group in the most important market of captives and in a public institution whose logic was based on impersonal and contractual ties, constitutive of urban life, offers us an interesting opportunity to reflect upon the forms of negotiation by which the gypsies obtained, in the sphere of work, a prominent role in the city of Rio de Janeiro - Their strategies reveal them to be a group with a highly competent sociological understand, who managed to gain a niche in the market, taking advantage of their ability to market goods which were commonly undervalued by big companies of dealers. |
