The theatre was largely a product of the determination and activism of the esteemed playwright, Arthur Azevedo, who tragically died nine months before his dream came to fruition. The architecture and design of the great edifice were based on the Paris Opera House. Much of the building's design is classic in nature, although the décor is reminiscent of Baroque styles using materials such as Gold, marble and featuring grandious pillars, paintings and engravings which endow the interior with a breathtaking aesthetic.
