at a glance

by the start of the nineteenth century landfill operations began, and the complete transformation of the area was underway. an area appropriately called the campo de marte, from the latin campus martius or, in english, the field of mars, was cleared for military training and maneuvers.

by the end of century several new streets had already been opened across the fields, and the whole region started to accommodate residential buildings, attracting and hosing the people benefiting from a strong local economic expansion.

visconde de mauá (viscount mauá) developed the surrounding area - during the 1850s, he opened the rua são pedro (st. peter street), the fábrica de gás (gas plant) and built the canal do mangue (mango canal).  arrow-back      arrow-forward
