in fact, due to these important developments, and the promise of prosperity, the area started to be called cidade nova (new city). by the end of the 1890s, most of the land reclamation was completed - more land was available for further development when the morro do senado (senate hill) was leveled. following that, new streets including the rua visconde duprat (viscount duprat street), rua pinto de azevedo (pinto de azevedo street) and rua pereira franco (pereira franco street) were opened. as the 20th century began, the neighborhood would become of the centers of rio's bohemian life - a whole area, called vila mimosa, started to emerge and remained popular for years to come. |
