the district of estácio has a particlular historical significance to the city of rio de janeiro, and is usually called the cradle of samba, mainly because it was in this region that the first samba school was born, the 'deixa falar', in the distant year of 1928. in the colonial era, the area now occupied by this neighborhood was a wide forest - and by the 19th century there were already a few roads crossing this region, one of them named 'mata-porcos', 'pig-slayer' in english, probably because it was the location of a slaughterhouse that supplied the city. this road was renamed estácio de sá in 1865, in a homage to the founder of rio de janeiro, and today this road is still one of the neighborhood's main arteries, and the reason why the district is so named. in the early 20th century, the region became a residential area for the workers of the industries that were quickly spreading across rio de janeiro. |
