at a glance |
in 1840 the our lady of health hospital was built at the top of gamboa hill. the region grew and become more urbanized and slowly started to become degraded, with several favelas communities growing in the enveloping hills. the whole area was part of the saúde neighborhood until it was dismantled and residents were relocated in the 1980s in order to address the rapid population growth. in fact, tourism of specific landmarks has spurred development in this area. though the current neighborhood was only established in the late nineteenth century, it is built upon one of the oldest beaches in rio de janeiro, the gamboa cove. today gamboa is undergoing much socioeconomic development. through a state initiative called porto maravilha (marvelous port project), the federal governments of rio de janeiro has given seven billion reals towards improvements infrastructure, real estate, and tourism within the port region. |
