one of the most visited sites in gamboa, the british cemetery, has existed in the area since 1815. the cemetery was by british ambassador, lord strangford, as a burial site for british protestants who died in brazil under the portuguese empire. public and private funds have helped to keep this cemetery site present, along with some of the other tourist sites of gamboa, like the theme park and cultural center, samba city. gamboa's samba city was revitalized with the attempt 'to transform the city's thematic activities of samba schools into a permanent practice and has developed into a place for constant production of art.'now, samba city is considered the meeting place for samba schools of the special group, which come prepare for performances, create costumes and design floats for annual carnival events. visitors are invited to attend and enjoy the activities. since public assistant has begun to be directed towards the devloment of gamboa in the form of government investment, private investment soon followed. The effects of increased financial support has enriched the neighborhood, partly by sponsoring cultural events and art exhibits in the community. |
