at a glance
the igreja de nossa senhora das neves (part of the igreja de santa teresa de jesus), was built using an eclectic mix of styles, french gothic outside and romanesque inside, creating a visual feast and architectural delight for those with an interest in the discipline, or anyone with an appreciation of beauty.

finally, t he convento de santa teresa (link), the church and first female convent of brazil belonging to the order of the carmelitas and that gave the name to the neighborhood.  this order, with almost no contact with the outside world is based on simplicity, humility, and discretion.  these nuns are almost never seen in the streets.  the convent can be seen from lapa right on the hill above the arches.

santa teresa also houses  a variety of cultural centers offering expositions, seminars, and other cultural events. arrow-back      arrow-forward
