Presented by the Colégio Pedro II, the study A questão da identidade no decorrer dos processos de patrimonialização das cidades: Santa Teresa e Alfama (The question of identity resulting from the process of patrimonialization in cities: Santa Teresa and Alfama), by Fabio Costa Peixoto e Maria Sarita Mota, discusses The representation of cities' pasts, as seen in the discursive practices of social agents and managers of historical heritage, and how it has been formed amidst disputes over the very meaning of history.

We have selected the neighborhoods of Santa Teresa, in the city of Rio de Janeiro and the neighborhood of Alfama, in the city of Lisbon, and will subject them to a few questions relating to the preservation of urban heritage, relating to the formation of traditions, the creation of symbols and the transformation of identities - In this way we hope to gain an understanding of the early imagination that endowed the neighborhood with a name, a community and almost a historic monument which experienced a great deal of tension as new territories and societies emerged as a result of modernization.
