He was also a great supporter of amateur theater and the emerging art of cinema. He died in 1947 and the train station was renamed in his honor, thus becoming Padre Miguel. This name was eventually also given to the neighborhood when it became official in 1985. The current name of the station is Mocidade Padre Miguel, in homage to the popular samba school of the same name in the neighborhood. The railway station endowed the area with its own distinctive identity, and over time a stadium was created, which to this day is popularly known as Moça Bonita, after the original train station. In the years 1955 and 1957 two samba schools were established: Mocidade Independente Padre Miguel, or 'Independent Youth Padre Miguel', and Unidos de Padre Miguel, or 'United Padre Miguel'. The neighborhood is currently densely populated and contains large favela communities at its peripheries. |
