pechincha is a neighborhood located in the west zone (zona oeste), one of rio de janeiro four zones. the bairro (neighborhood) is bordered by freguesia jacarepaguá, cidade de deus, or city of god, taquara and tanque. it is located on the old caminho da freguesia (parish road), which is now known as avenida geremário dantas (geremário dantas avenue).

pechincha, in portuguese, is to bargain or haggle and it is said, that the bairro's name comes from a well know vendor, who was famous for his haggling in an old market in the area. he competed fiercely with the market in nearby freguesia da taquara (taquara parish).

pechincha developed around the intersection of the estrada tindiba (tindiba street) and estrada pau ferro (iron stick street, at the beginning of the 20th century. in 1918, an actor named leopoldo constantino fróes cross, who went by his stage name - leopoldo fróes established the bairro's casa dos artistas (arts house). by 1919, it evolved into the retiro dos artistas (artist's retreat). arrow-back      arrow-forward
