The railroad arrived by the end of the century, and the region received a train station. When the imperial era came to an end, and during the republic's infancy, military use of the land was further expanded and several installations were built to support the armed forces, like ammunition factories and an academy. interestingly, The Realengo region gained great acclaim as a result of Gilberto Gil's song Aquele Abraço, or 'That Hug', in which he refers to the time in which he was held in military prisons in Realengo during the time of the Military Dictatorship. Although the region received its first residential areas after the establishment of the train station, significant urban development only took place in the 1970s and 1980s. 1995 saw the opening of Universidade Castelo Branco, which translates as 'White Castle University' in English, which is a private institution offering a diverse range of courses. Local restaurants include the Coma Bem Pizzeria, which translates as the 'Eat Well Pizzeria', and the Churrascaria Vagão, or 'Wagon Grill'. Hotels in the region include L'amour and the Hotel Saint Moritz. | joá | |||
