at a glance

in fact, the zeppelin hindenburg did travel to rio de janeiro, and landed at this base on july 13th 1936, transporting the famous swiss architect le corbusier, in brazil to meet with iconic architects lúcio costa and oscar niemeyer.

the hangar was named 'bartolomeu de gusmão airport' and became a training base for the first fighter aviation group for combat over italy.  today the brazilian air force uses the hangar for f-5e and a-1 fighter training - it has also been preserved as a brazilian historical heritage site since 1998.

in general, it is closed to the public but visits can be scheduled with appointment by contacting the base aérea de santa cruz - basc on this page. the hangar do zeppelin is located at the base aérea de santa cruz, rua do império, and can be seen on this wikimapia. arrow-back      arrow-forward
