also in botafogo is the home of rui barbosa, a neo-classical museum dedicated to the life and work of rui barbosa de oliveira, one of the brightest intellectuals of his time, one of the founders of the republic and co-author of the constitution of the first republic with prudente de morais - rui barbosa was also an influential political figure that fought for abolition of slavery in the 19th century, he lived in the estate, that is today the museum, from 1895 to 1923.

the house and garden are preserved in the manner in which rui left it and archives over 35,000 volumes of his old books and documents, telling the story of brazil's origin - in 1924, the building, library, and garden were turned over to the ministry of culture, which opened the museum to the public in 1930, and ever since, researchers, professors and intellectuals come from all over the world to examine barbosa's work.     arrow-back      arrow-forward
