at a glance

laranjeiras is a neighborhood that grew along the carioca river in the south zone of rio de janeiro, bordering flamengo - the settlement of the area started within the valley of the hill of corcovado, which prospered along the banks of the carioca river.

brazilian natives nicknamed the river, rio catete, meaning thick bush - indeed, the neighborhood of laranjeiras is characterized by thick vegetation and pleasant forest scenery.

in fact, laranjeiras earned its name, 'orange trees', as a result of the many orange trees that grew along the palaces of laranjeiras and guanabara, both still intact today and exist as government offices for the state of rio -  currently, the official residency of the governor of rio is at the laranjeiras palace, but he does not necessarily live there. arrow-back      arrow-forward
