botafogo is a district of the zona sul bordering, copacabana, humaitá, urca, leme, flamengo, laranjeiras, and cosme velho.

populated by upper and upper-middle class residents,  this neighborhood is home to praia de botafogo, one of the most photographed and famous beaches of rio due to the beauty of the small boats of the port set against the spectacular view of the sugar loaf. 

botafogo beach and the sugar loaf are frequently photographed from the corcovado, home to the christ the redeemer statue - this beach is rarely suitable for swimming due to the water quality, however it is regularly used for sporting events and shows such as the popular sand sculpture competition.
