at a glance

jardim botânico or the 'botanical garden', is a bairro (neighborhood) located in the zona sul (south zone) of rio de janeiro and is named literally after its primary feature, the botanical garden of rio - it is situated between the neighborhoods of gávea and lagoa in the mountainous hillside of corcovado.

in the 18th century, the governor at the time erected a chapel along the cabeça river, which exists until this day - in the early days the region was used primarily for the cultivation of cane sugar.

following the arrival of the royal family in 1808, the royal gunpowder manufacturing factory was constructed in the area, which stayed in operation until 1851 - this stimulated the settlement of the jardim botânico area, after factory workers began to inhabit the surrounding region. arrow-back      arrow-forward
