at a glance

the neighborhood of laranjeiras is home to a diverse, mostly affluent population and is marked by mansions and large homes situated upon vast plots of land - in an attempt to maintain some of the city's heritage, laranjeiras underwent a restoration project to revive 'casas casada' (married houses), is a multi-family housing structure dating back to 1883.

in 1996, that structure was bought by the district of laranjeiras and was reconstructed into public film screening room and location for special public programs - a bookstore and on site restaurant was built there in addition.

being a neighborhood full of heritage, laranjeiras is also considered the connection between the north and south rio de janeiro - the santa barbara tunnel, which was constructed in 1963, is a throughway that intersects the district, and links the two regions. arrow-back      arrow-forward
