in early twentieth century, the development of this neighborhood also saw the instauration of the headquarters for a car club, and for the the important soccer teams botafogo and fluminense.

part of botafogo is also the favela santa marta,  also called donna marta, one of the most famous favelas in rio. 

in santa marta michael jackson filmed the video for 'they do not care about us', in 2009 the international pos star madonna visited the community, and again in 2010 alicia keys and beyonce filmed a music clip here.

this favela was occupied by rio's pacifying police force - upp in 2008, and it is considered a safe area to visit - it has free wi-fi internet across the whole area.
