A welfare index of the vidigal population, called the 'Freedom Index' (FI), was calculated from interviews with a sample population - The FI was based on 13 functions (valuable people and actions for human life), which were measured with 60 indicators, including both universally relevant aspects of individuals' welfare and specificities of a favela context.
