The Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora (UPP) (Pacifying Police Force) was inaugurated in Vidigal in January of 2012. It was the 19th favela to have a UPP unit installed. The police occupation of the area began in November 2011 on the same date as the process was instigated in Rocinha. Over 30,000 residents have since been affected by the pacification.

The efforts to retain peace and rid the community from organized crime are ongoing, but the police-force has made excellent headway. Marginalized groups continue to attempt to regain lost power but their attempts have largely been quelled.

The UPP have worked hand in hand with many excellent community organizations to reduce violence, educate and improve the quality of life for members of the community.
